The Philadelphia Soul won Arena Football League Championship last Friday, their second title in sight years. So where’s the parade?
The Philadelphia Soul won a championship last week, and no one in Philadelphia seems to care.
And that is a real shame on a whole lot of levels.
Last Friday night the Soul, Philly’s very own AFL franchise whose majority owner is none other than former Eagle Ron Jaworski, beat the Arizona Rattlers 56-42 in Arena Bowl XXIX. The team went out to a 21-0 lead early but the Rattlers, who were the heavy favorites to win, came roaring back to make a game out it. They tied the game at 42 early in the fourth quarter but nothing could stop the Soul as Shaun Kauleinamoku caught a pair of touchdowns to seal the deal.
It was sweet revenge for the Soul, who had lost to Arizona in the AFL championship game in both 2012 and 2013.
And of course there was a bit of controversy as the game wasn’t played in the Rattlers usual home arena. The Phoenix Mercury, Arizona’s WNBA team, had a game there scheduled for the same time so the Rattlers had to find a new venue to play the game.
Yes, in the world of sports the WNBA outranks the AFL. Go figure.
But at the end of the day, the Soul brought a championship to Philly!
So where is the parade?
The last time the Soul won the AFL Championship in 2008, they did get a small parade to commemorate the occasion. But so far there has been no word on if the team can expect one this time as well.
Let me just say that if the Soul don’t get some kind of parade down Broad Street, then this city and its sports fans can go suck an egg as far as I’m concerned.
I mean, it’s not like we get a lot of opportunities to celebrate anything sports-related around here. The last time any of our four major sports team won anything was in 2008 when the Phillies won the title.
Despite some people’s complaining, the Villanova Wildcats got a parade for winning the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship earlier this year. We gave the Taney Dragons little league team a parade and they didn’t even win anything at the Little League World Series.
So why the hell aren’t we planning a parade for the Philadelphia Soul?
And don’t give me the “If we give parades to everyone they won’t be special anymore” argument. Before the Philles won it all in 2008, the last time we have an excuse to celebrate was in 1983 when the Sixers won the NBA Finals.

Believe me, there is no way championship parades will ever become commonplace in this city.
The bottom line is the Soul deserve a parade. It doesn’t have to be a big parade but just something to show these guys that we care and that we are happy for them. It is probably the only time these players will ever get to experience something like it in their careers.
The AFL might not matter to many in the greater scheme of sports, but championships are still a rare thing in this city. It should be celebrated and appreciated.
Give the Soul a parade. It’s the right thing to do.
