You can add one more honor to a career that has been filled with them for Bernie Parent.
It was announced on Thursday that the former Flyers goalie and Hall of Fame inductee will be included in a set of six stamps that will honor some of the greatest goalies to ever mind the net in the NHL.
Issued by Canada Post, the The 2015 NHL Great Canadian Goalies set will include stamps featuring Lorne “Gump” Worsley, Johnny Bower, Tony Esposito, Ken Dryden and Martin Brodeur along with our own Bernie Parent.
Each player in the set has won both the Stanley Cup and the Vezina Trophy, and in the case of Parent it also includes the Conn Smythe Trophy for being the most valuable player for the Flyers in the 1974 and 1975 NHL playoffs. These six goalies are considered the best of the best, having changed the way the position is played and looked at by fans and non-fans alike.
It should be obvious to anyone who loves hockey why Parent deserves this honor. The man is a Flyers legend and his iconic mask will forever be remembered as a symbol of one of the greatest periods in the history of this franchise. Parent was a five-time All-Star, was the second player to ever have his number retired by the Flyers and, as the saying went, “Only the Lord saves more than Bernie Parent”
Bill Daly, the NHL Deputy Commissioner, had this to say about the honor being given to to six of the greatest goalies of all time.
“Many people dream of playing in the NHL, but only a distinguished number of players achieve it; and an even smaller, esteemed group leave a timeless impression. Having some of the greatest NHL goalies immortalized on these stamps is remarkable; a true testament to their impact on hockey fans around the world. We’re proud to share this momentous occasion with the players, their loved ones, and the fans.”
This is the third of five sets that Canada Post is producing leading up to the 100th anniversary of the NHL in 2017. It follows the NHL Team jerseys set released in 2013 and the Original Six defensemen set from last year.
Since this is obviously something no true Flyers fan can be without, you can oder yours online on the Canada Post website.
